ACWORTH, Ga. --- Raven Loveless tossed a complete game five-hitter in the opening game of the HBCU Classic, helping Tennessee State to a victory over Alabama State. The Tigers claimed a 4-1 victory over the Hornets before falling by the same score to Prairie View A&M.
Loveless surrendered an unearned run in the fifth inning as she held ASU in check. The freshman pitcher improved to 2-2 as she fanned two batters while issuing just one free pass.
Beckey Melton paced the Tigers offensively as she delivered RBI singles in the first and third innings to produce a 2-0 lead. TSU added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning as Katie Schneider doubled to centerfield, chasing home Bri Vire. Three batters later, Savanah Wallace laced a ball into left center to plate Schneider for the 4-0 lead.
In the nightcap, Prairie View A&M reversed the roles on the Tigers, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through four innings. TSU threatened in the fifth as Erica O'Kane and Sarah Snell earned walks. The Big Blue got on the scoreboard as Megan Huppee reached on a throwing error, allowing pinch runner Patton Akers to score.
The threat ended and PVAMU responded with a run in the sixth. The Tigers hammered a couple balls to the fence in the last couple of innings, but each time the long balls were caught at the fence.
Schneider suffered the loss falling to 0-4 after working 5.2 innings. Schneider struck out four batters as she was touched for four runs on six hits and four walks.

The Tigers willl face close out play at the HBCU Classic with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Jackson State before facing Grambling at 3:00 p.m.
