Tennessee State Wins Home Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Tennessee State won its home opener against Chattanooga Tuesday, Sept. 3 in the Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium on the campus of Fisk University. TSU pulled out a win over Chattanooga 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18). 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Gina Rivera Oritz surpassed 600 digs registering 13 on the night. 
  • Julia Pierson and Aniya Williams both scored 13 kills. 
  • Teulia Lolotai recorded 25 assists, second to UTC's Maddie Halsey with 30. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE

  • The Tigers started off with a four point lead thanks to aggressive serves and a kill for the Tigers; Chattanooga tried to find it's way with kills from Dani Szczepanski, Sarah Root and Brianna Anderson.
  • The Mocs took the lead only for TSU to come back with with an ace from Jasmine Fuqua.
  • Khalia Jordan worked the inside notching two kills to keep the Tigers on top.
  • With a strong offense, Chattanooga stayed in the game, but Tennessee State pulled ahead with a kill from Aria Holmes and an ace from Jordan.
  • Helping secure a huge lead, Aniya Williams got her second kill of the set.
  • Julia Pierson stole the set for TSU with her third kill to help TSU win, 25-16. 

SET TWO

  • The Mocs came out pumped and took the board first, but the Tigers fought back with kills from Fuqua and Jordan.
  • Aniya Williams with two kills in a row helped the Tigers get back into the set.
  • But, the Mocs consistent play at the net allowed the team to hold the lead thanks to kills from Szczepanski and Root.
  • UTC held on tight to that lead despite TSU's attempts, but an attack error on UTC tied the set.
  • Williams and Holmes with two kills pulled Tennessee State ahead.
  • UTC tied the game, 24-24, with a kill from Gylian Finch.
  • Chattanooga took the second set 26-24.

SET THREE

  • With a four point lead, TSU's Fuqua scored with her fifth kill of the match.
  • Chattanooga weasled it's way back on to the scoreboard with a block error on TSU.
  • With kills from Holmes and a block assist from Holmes and Pierson, TSU keeps the lead.
  • Kendall Bullock secured her first kill of the game giving the Tigers a four-point lead, again.
  • A strong Chattanooga defense kept UTC in the game, but with her seventh kill of the match Fuqua keeps the Tigers at a lead.
  • Julia Pierson with two kills in a row, giving her nine in the match, put UTC in the ground.
  • Aria Holmes with her seventh kill of the match won the set for TSU, 25-21. 

SET FOUR

  • The Tigers came out strong with kills from Holmes, Fuqua and Kariely Santana-Delgado.
  • With an eight point lead, Chattanooga starting fighting back with a kill from Szczepanski, only to be stopped by Fuqua with her ninth kill for TSU.
  • Chattanooga found holes in the Tigers defense, but TSU's offense is put up too many points with Williams and Pierson putting up 13 kills each in this match.
  • Although the Mocs put up a fight, the Tigers took the fourth set and the match with a setting error on UTC. Tigers won the fourth set 25-18. 

MATCH NOTES

  • By winning this match TSU's record agasint UTC is now 3-7.
  • Tennessee State's overall record is now 2-2. 
  • Defensively racking up 13 digs, Gina Rivera-Ortiz reached her 600 dig milestone, adding up to a career high of 605. 

UP NEXT

Tennessee State will participate in the Jaguar Invitational Sept. 6-7. The Tigers will compete against South Alabama, Mississippi Valley State and Northwestern State.
