JACKSONVILLE, Ala. --- Two double-double performances by Shakem Johnson and Wesley Harris lifted the Tennessee State men's basketball team to its fifth Ohio Valley Conference win, 72-62, Thursday night in the Pete Mathews Coliseum on the campus of Jacksonville State University.  

A low-scoring game over the course of the first twelve minutes of the first half, JSU led TSU 19-8 after a 17-0 run. Tennessee State picked up steam to close the 11-point lead to as little as three before the Gamecocks entered the locker room leading, 31-28.

Leading scorer Johnson kicked off the second half with six-straight points, setting the tone for the half. TSU went 15-for-24 from the field, 14-for-21 from the charity stripe and grabbed 24 rebounds in the second half alone. 

Johnson scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Harris, in his first game back after a four-game break, scored 14 points, 11 rebounds. Two more Tigers notched double-digit scoring while one other grabbed double-digit boards. 

TSU is now 13-9 overall, 5-4 in OVC play moving into the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Over two and a half minutes ran off the clock before either team could get a shot to sink, and that was Jacksonville State with an up-and-under layup.
  • Another 1:30 ran off the clock before Michael Littlejohn drove the lane for a TSU layup.
  • Just three baskets between teams were scored within seven minutes of play.
  • Shakem Johnson threw down the first slam of the night, increasing Big Blue's lead, 8-2.
  • JSU then went on a 14-0 run punctuated by back-to-back three-point shots.
  • Jy'lan Washington free throws and Littlejohn three-pointers decreased what was an 11-point lead to just three.
  • The Gamecocks entered the break leading 31-28.
  • Johnson stepped on the court and went for an unanswered six points to kick off the half.
  • The Tigers followed with an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 44-38 – the largest of the night.
  • Washington drew a foul for a three-point play; TSU led 59-53.
  • TSU outscored JSU 13-9 in the final three minutes of play to close out its second OVC road win, 72-62.

  • The Tigers lead the all-time series against the Gamecocks, 20-15.
  • When taking on Jacksonville State in Alabama, TSU is 6-12 in the all-time series.
  • In the last four seasons, TSU is 3-2 in Jacksonville.
