Tigers Fall to the Jaguars in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Four hours away from home, the Tigers took on its first nonconference opponent in IUPUI Saturday afternoon in an empty Indiana Farmers Coliseum. After forty minutes of action, Tennessee State men's basketball is now 0-2 on the year.
 
Shakem Johnson led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds, while sophomore point guard Mark Freeman led in assists and steals (3).
 
Nashville's own Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. scored the final three points for Big Blue with 49 seconds left on the clock to make it a one-possession game. IUPUI, who had gone 16-23 from the free throw line, received four more chances within the final minute of competitive action to win the night 69-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tigers won the jump ball, allowing Shakem Johnson to secure the first basket of the afternoon.
  • High energy and shooting accuracy, a bit of what the Tigers missed in its season opener at Belmont helped the team to a 6-0 start.
  • Ball handling mishaps led to turnovers which led to IUPUI finally breaking its scoring drought at 16:44 on the clock.
  • The Tigers had its own scoring lull cut short by a Johnson layup, but the time had passed and the Jags went on a 10-0 run.
  • Shakwon Barrett did some magic and maneuvered from the top of the key to under the basket for two.
  • Three minutes left in the period, TSU down 37-29 thanks to Jags accuracy beyond the arc, Big Blue went hard in the paint and closed the half 41-37.
  • Mark Freeman lob to Yusuf Mohamed twice. Big Blue up four after the break.
  • Over eight minutes of action, the Tigers trailed in a 16-2 run with eight points for the Jags made at the free-throw line. TSU defense held IUPUI to 1-5 from three.
  • 51.2 seconds left on the clock and down four, freshman guard Fitzgerald gets the ball in the corner for a three making it a one-possession game.
  • A foul sends IUPUI's Burk back to the free throw line. He misses both, allowing Mohamed to grab the rebound.
  • One additional foul and one trip to the charity stripe solidified the home opening win for the Jags 69-66.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Jags improve to 1-0 in the all-time series against the Tigers, as this matchup served as the first meeting between the teams.
  • Josh Linder fouled out with 3:47 left in the game.
