NASHVILLE --- Freshman point guard Marcus Fitzgerald, Jr. scored a thrilling 32 points in the comeback attempt that fell short Thursday evening in the Gentry Center as the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars defeated the Tigers in its first game since Dec. 18, 67-65.

Tied at 64 with 1:35 left in regulation, SIUE's Shamar Wright came up with a slam dunk to take a two-point lead. The Tigers trapped and played stand-up defense until it was time to foul.

Foul one, a 51 percent free-throw shooter, missed both. Fitzgerald was fouled and made one, 66-65. Foul two, a 71 percent free throw shooter, made one, 67-65. On the final play, with two seconds on the clock,
Ravel Moody passed cross court to Mohamed at the wing. Mohamed pulls up and misses.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marcus Fitzgerald, Jr. scored the first five points for the Tigers in his first start at point.
- Yusuf Mohamed and Josh Linder combined for 15 points giving TSU a 14-point lead late in the first.
- The Tigers got comfortable allowing SIUE to go on 12-0 run to end the half. Tennessee State led at the break for its first time since Jacksonville State, 27-25.
- A Cougar dunk to start the second period proved the momentum wasn't lost in the locker room.
- With 11 minutes left in regulation, SIUE took over and its extended its lead, 42-38.
- Shakwon Barrett closed out a 2:30 minute scoring drought with an up-and under layup.
- Shooting accuracy completely dissolved for the Tigers as SIUE went on another 12-2 run.
- Evan Joyner scored his first basket in blue and white after playing for the first time in over a month.
- Fitzgerald, Jr. brought energy back to the floor going on his own seven-point run, punctuated with a three-point play which kicked off a 15-0 TSU run. Tied at 57.
- The Cougars answered with shots beyond the arc to go up six.
- Fitzgerald, Moody and Mohamed worked to tie it again at 64 with 1:35 left in regulation.
- An SIUE dunk with just under a minute left brought it down to the wire with the Cougars in the lead.
- The Tigers fouled for a chance at possession. The final play with 2 seconds left on the clock, Moody pass up court to the wing where Mohamed attempted his final three of the night to win it all – and missed.Â

- TSU is 5-2 when taking on SIUE in Nashville.
- This marks the 13th meeting between Tennessee State and SIUE.
