Men's Basketball Kicks Off Road Swing at Murray State

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State men's basketball team kicks off a four-game road swing at Murray State, Thursday, Jan. 28. Tip on ESPN+ and the Big Blue Sports Network is set for 7:30 p.m. in CFSB Center, following the Lady Tigers game.
 
A victory on Tuesday would mark the 31ST win for head coach Brian "Penny" Collins.
 
LAST TIME OUT
After seven four-point losses this season, the Tennessee State men's basketball team garnered its second Ohio Valley Conference victory at home, 65-54.

Marcus Fitzgerald, Jr. led the team in scoring with 15, while Yusuf Mohamed pulled down eight rebounds and Mason Green continued his blocking crusade with three. 

The hidden weapon Tiger fans didn't know was hiding on the bench was freshman Evan Joyner. The 6-8 forward who had only played a total of 12 minutes all season scored a season-high six points, six rebounds in 17 minutes.  

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE RACERS
The Tennessee State men's basketball team suffered its second home loss to the Murray State Racers in the Gentry Center, 73-65.

The Tigers led for 12 minutes of the first half, by as much as nine, before the Racers fought to tie the score four times. Leading 33-29 at the half, Murray State followed its performance outscoring TSU 40-36 in the second as well.

Jy'lan Washington paced the evening leading the first half with 12 points, ending the night leading the Tigers with 24 points, 13 rebounds. Michael Littlejohn contributed 13 points, four rebounds, four assists.

Murray State's Tevin Brown and KJ Williams combined for 41 points, Brown leading the night with 28 points.

SERIES BREAKDOWN
  • The Racers lead the all-time series against TSU, 56-17 and have won the last fIVE and 18-of-21 since 2009.
  • Big Blue's last win over MSU was in 2016 at home and their last win in Murray was in 2012. 
  • In that 2011-12 season, TSU ended Murray State's 23-0 winning streak as the Racers were the last undefeated team in the nation. Current NBA forward Rob Covington led the Tigers with 17 points, eight rebounds that night.
  • In the 2016 season win, Tahjere McCall, current G-League star, led TSU in scoring. Three of the top scorers of that game all went on to play professionally. 
  • Four games between the foes have gone into overtime, three in Murray.
  • TSU's record in OT games versus the Racers is 1-3.
  • The teams have met six times in the first round of the OVC Tourney, all games in Murray, and all games won by Murray.
