Volleyball Downed by Austin Peay

NASHVILLE — Saturday's match was a high intensity one with Austin Peay State University (15-7, 8-1 OVC), the Ohio Valley Conference's top team, sweeping the homestanding Tennessee State University Tigers (9-10, 1-9).

"It was intense at times out there," said TSU head coach Donika Sutton. "Playing against an in-state rival it happens. We have to continue to build though. We are young and still trying to find the right combinations. We have three days of practice before our next match. We will watch film and get better."

FIRST SET: APSU 25-21

The first set started out nip and tuck with Austin Peay scoring first on a kill by Brooke Moore. A kill by junior Aleksandra Rojecka tied the score at one. With Moore serving, APSU went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. After dropping four points on three occasions, TSU climbed back in with junior Carla Boudal serving. That cut  the lead to 11-10. Once again, TSU tying the set at 15 on a service ace by freshman Hadley Pride.

APSU made it to 20 first on another kill by Moore setting the score at 20-17. A kill by Claire Darland made it 21-17,  forcing a TSU timeout. After the timeout, APSU made it 23-19 on a kill by Makayla Powell which forced TSU to take their second timeout of the set. A service ace by Carolina Waite made it set point for the Governors. APSU finished the set off on a kill by Jaida Clark.
TSU was led in the set by Rojecka's four kills. Senior Sofia Garcia-Guerrios led the Tigers with nine assists and six digs.

SECOND SET: APSU 28-26

After APSU scored the first point of the set, the Tigers scored the next two points giving TSU their first lead since early in the first set. APSU took the lead at 6-5 on a ball handling error by TSU's Aria Holmes. After APSU built a two-point lead, freshman Storm White tied the score at 10 with a kill. TSU regained the lead at 13-12 on an attack error by APSU's Maggie Keenan.
Two consecutive Rojecka kills made it 16-14, forcing APSU to call timeout. After the timeout, APSU scratched back and regained the lead on a Moore service at 19-18. TSU took the lead back on a White kill to make it 20-19. An attack error by White made it a 22-20 advantage for APSU, forcing TSU to call timeout.

After the timeout, TSU managed to tie the score at 23 on an attack error by APSU's Powell. But a kill by APSU's Kaylah Jackson gave her team set point forcing TSU to call timeout. Rojecka then converted her eighth kill of the match, tying it at 25. A Jackson attack error gave TSU set point. APSU then tied the set at 26, eventually taking the set 28-26 on two consecutive kills by Moore.

Rojecka continued her strong showing, adding five more kills in the set. Rivera-Ortiz joined Garcia-Guerrios in leading the team with nine digs. Garcia-Guerrios converted six assists to give her a team leading 15 assists for the match. White also gave TSU a lift, swinging at a .417 clip.

THIRD SET:

TSU scored the first point of the set on an attack error by APSU's Carla Darland. APSU then went on a 4-0 run to take an early advantage. APSU built their lead to 9-4 on a service ace by Marlayna Bullington. The Governors then stretched their lead to 13-6 on a Rojecka attack error forcing TSU to take a timeout.

After the timeout, APSU kept their momentum going, stretching the lead to 14-6, giving them their largest lead of the match. TSU chipped away at the lead cutting the deficit to 19-14 on a service by freshman Hadley Pride, then Kendall Washington and Rojecka converted kills to make it 21-17 but it was as close as the Tigers could get, as APSU finished the match off on a kill by Elizabeth Wheat.
