MARTIN, TN.- A tough night was the way to describe the Tennessee State Tigers' (10-17, 2-16 OVC) final regular season match as they fell to the UT-Martin Skyhawks (15-16, 11-7 OVC) in straight sets (25-16, 25-12 and 25-22). The Skyhawks led pretty much wire to wire in each set. There were only three total ties in the match. In the first set, the Skyhawks took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back.
Addison Conley led Martin with five kills in the set. The key run in the set was after going up 15-8 at the media break, Martin reeled off a 5-0 run to put the set away. TSU freshman
Tai' Roni Holland had two consecutive kills to cut the lead to 19-10, but the short run was short lived as the Skyhawks finished the set off on a Jessica Reynolds kill.
The second set was pretty much like the first set. Martin went up 9-2 to force TSU to call a timeout. Tiger senior
Mion Weldon had two kills for the two points. Two kills by TSU junior
Aleksandra Rojecka cut the lead to 12-6 but that was as close as the Tigers could get. Martin dominated the rest of the set on the strength of six Karen Scanlon kills. Scanlon swung at a .750 clip in the set.
The most competitive set was the third set. An early 4-0 run gave Martin an 8-3 lead. The Skyhawks stretched the lead to 14-8 forcing TSU to call a timeout. The Tigers went on a quick spurt and cut the lead to 16-11 on the strength of two Weldon kills along with a
Aniya Williams kill.
The Tigers wouldn't give up eventually cutting the lead to 23-20 on a Francela Ulate service error forcing UT-Martin to call a timeout. A
Gina Rivera-Ortiz service error gave Martin match point.
Ulate followed up with a service error and Weldon got a kill to make the score 24-22. The Skyhawks finished the match off on a
Storm White attack error.
