Men's Basketball Focused on Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Tennessee State men's basketball team concludes their road trip at the University of Nebraska on Tuesday evening.

The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (1-3, 0-0 OVC) at Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-2, 0-0 Big Ten)

Series History: This will be the first meeting between the two programs.

Last Time Out for TSU: Tennessee State fell to South Dakota on Sunday afternoon, 83-66. Carlos Marshall Jr. led the team with 16 points on 6-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. USD was aided by free-throw opportunities as they went 39-of-49 from the charity stripe. Graduate student, Kenny Cooper, swiped a season-high four steals. The transfer's career-high of seven steals occurred in 2018 as a member of Lipscomb University. Jalen Dupree, a transfer from Samford, tallied 12 points on 5-of-6 from the field. Dupree posted a season-high in points and minutes (28).
 
Last Time Out for NU: Nebraska defeated Southern on Sunday afternoon, 82-59, at the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Bryce McGowens, a freshman five-star recruit, logged his first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The highly touted prospect went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, while he added four assists, two steals and a block. Derrick Walker, a junior transfer from Tennessee, recorded a career-high 15 points on 7-of-8 from the field. NU controlled the paint as they out-scored Southern, 46-20, from inside. While the Cornhuskers were successful from the free-throw line (24-for-30), they did not find the same success from at the three-point line as Nebraska went 4-for-23 from deep.
 
About the Tigers: TSU added seven transfers to the roster, including six D-I student-athletes, as well as three true freshmen. Dedric Boyd, a transfer from Illinois State, and Marshall Jr. are tied for the team lead with 51 points in four games (12.8 ppg). Cooper, a transfer from WKU by way of Lipscomb, has snatched a team-leading nine steals. Second-year freshman Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. leads the team in assists (12), while the Nashville native is ranked third in points (41). UAB transfer, Kassim Nicholson, has registered at least nine points and nine rebounds in three of four games this year. 
 
About the Cornhuskers: Nebraska is led by head coach Fred Hoiberg, former Chicago Bulls head coach who propelled the Bulls to a playoff appearance in his second season at the helm. His latest recruiting class, ranked in the top-15 nationally by ESPN, was headlined by Bryce McGowens and top-100 recruit Wilhelm Breidenbach. This year's roster returns 10 players while they added eight scholarship newcomers. The three returning starters combined for 70 starts last season, including the older brother of Bryce, Trey McGowens. The junior transfer from Pittsburgh, Trey McGowens, started all 27 games and averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2020-21 at NU. However, the leading returner is currently sidelined following foot surgery on November 17. The transfers are led by Alonzo Verge Jr., who averaged 14.0 points, 3.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds at Arizona State. Verge Jr., a fifth-year senior, was named Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year in 2019-20. Junior college transfer, Keisei Tominaga, earned NJCAA All-America honors after 16.3 points per game and 48% from three-point range.
