NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team returns home to host Southern University on Sunday afternoon, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Series History: TSU holds a comfortable lead in the series history, 13-4, as the two teams most recently met on December 30, 1995. The Tigers secured the victory, 84-79, in a neutral site contest held in Memphis, Tenn. Between 1950 and 1970, the two institutions met 13 times; in 1968, they had two matchups which both went to overtime and were both decided by four points.
Last Time Out for TSU: Tennessee State suffered a hard-fought loss at Nebraska, 79-73, on Tuesday (11/23). TSU held a three point lead at halftime against the Big Ten foe, 41-38.
Dedric Boyd led the Tigers with 23 points on 8-of-15 from the field, 6-of-11 from long range.
Kassim Nicholson posted his second double-double of the year, totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Last Time Out for SU: Southern University destroyed NCCAA opponent Ecclesia College, 109-53, on Tuesday evening (11/23). It was the first home game of the year for the Jaguars. Brion Whitley led the way with 29 points, six rebounds and five steals. Tyrone Lyons posted 25 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.
"The Microwave" in the Cabinet: Head coach Brian "Penny" Collins nicknamed Dedric Boyd, "The Microwave", in a recent interview. The transfer from Illinois State, Boyd, has played 20-plus minutes off the bench in all five games this season. The Brownsville, Tenn. native leads the team in points (71) and three-pointers made (14). The redshirt junior's registered at least 15 points in four of five games.
Mississippi King (of Rebounds): Through five games, Kassim Nicholson ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference and 30th in the NCAA with 48 rebounds (9.6 rpg). Nicholson, a graduate student from Jackson, Miss., has secured at least nine points and nine rebounds in four of five games. The UAB transfer's grabbed double-digit boards in three contests, including a season-high 15 rebounds in the season opener against Alabama A&M (11/09). He's led the team in rebounds (48) through all five games entering Southern on Sunday, November 28.
Road Tested: Prior to Sunday's contest, the two programs have combined for 11 games, totaling nine games on the road. TSU and Southern have played one home game a piece. The Jaguars are 1-4 on the road thus far, while the Tigers' sole home game was a success against Fisk – scoring 111 points on the crosstown rival.
Common Opponents: Tennessee State and Southern visited South Dakota and Nebraska in the week leading up to Thanksgiving. USD grabbed the win by a slim margin, 71-68, on November 19. On November 21, the Cornhuskers dominated the Jaguars, 82-59.
