12/11/2021 3:39:00 PM

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team will take on crosstown rival, Lipscomb University, on Sunday afternoon at the Allen Arena on the Bisons' campus.

The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (2-6, 0-0 OVC) at Lipscomb Bisons (5-5, 0-0 ASUN)
Date/Time: Sunday, December 12 || 4:00 p.m.
Location: Allen Arena || Nashville, Tenn.

Series History: This will be the 11th meeting between the two Nashville institutions; Lipscomb holds the series lead by a slim margin, 6-4. The first matchup took place in December 1992 as the Bisons secured the initial win. These two teams most recently met on November 12, 2019, when the Tigers' Michael Littlejohn cashed a buzzer beater to give TSU the 79-78 victory. Shakem Johnson and Carlos Marshall Jr. combined for 19 points.

Last Time Out for TSU: Tennessee State snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominating performance over IUPUI on Friday night, 70-44. Dedric Boyd led the team in points (20) for the third time in eight games, as he shot 8-of-10 from the field. TSU swiped double-digit steals for the second time this season. Christian Brown matched his career-high with four steals in 19 minutes of action.

Last Time Out for LU: Lipscomb took a trip down south and visited the University of Miami on Wednesday afternoon. The Bison ultimately fell, 76-59, after competing throughout the first half. LU led with five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Hurricanes were able to manufacture a 14-0 scoring stretch to take control of the game. Kaleb Coleman led the Bisons with 12 points while KJ Johnson posted nine points and five assists. Freshman Quincy Clark recorded a career-high nine points and two steals. Lipscomb shot 37% (23-for-62) from the field, converting on just 25% (7-for-28) from three-point range.

Grand Coop: Kenny Cooper tallied seven points in the win over IUPUI on Friday night (12/10). Cooper, a graduate transfer from WKU by way of Lipscomb, joined the 1,000-point club during the contest. The Nashville native attended Franklin Road Academy and played under Lipscomb great, John Pierce. Cooper appeared in 100 games for the Bison with 67 starts in three seasons ('16-19). He guided the Bison to the NCAA Tournament in '17-18 as they ran into North Carolina in the opening round. As a junior ('17-18), the guard averaged 9.8 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and two steals per game for the purple and gold.

D.B. for Three: Dedric Boyd registered a game-high 20 points against IUPUI, totaling 20+ points for the second time this season. "The Microwave" as Coach Collins calls him, leads the team in points per game (13.4) and three-pointers made (19). Boyd, a transfer from Illinois State, has converted on 19-of-40 (47.5%) from deep. He averages 2.3 three-pointers per game, which slightly misses the NCAA leaderboard qualification of 2.5 three-pointers made per game. If he were to qualify, the redshirt-junior would rank in the top 25 nationally in three-point percentage. The Brownsville, Tenn., native converted 4-of-6 from deep against IUPUI, totaling the fourth game this year with at least three long-range jumpers.

Freshman Sensation: Lipscomb's Jacob Ognacevic, a freshman from Sheboygan, Wi., leads the Bison in points (175), ranks second in blocks (8) and third in rebounds (53). The 6-7 forward has only started in four of ten games while leading the team in scoring. Prior to the contest against Miami, Ognacevic logged at least 20 points in four straight games. The freshman transfer from Valparaiso set a career-high in points (30) in the season opener against Birmingham-Southern, as he converted 17-of-18 from the free-throw line.
