Men's Basketball Visits South Carolina State

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team will complete their road trip with a Saturday matinee against South Carolina State.
 
The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (4-6, 0-0 OVC) at South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-8, 0-0 MEAC)

Series History: TSU holds a lead in the series, 5-2. The first meeting took place in 1949-50 as the Tigers secured a blowout victory, 74-29. The most recent matchup happened in December 1990 as they escaped with a one-point win, 78-77.

Last Time Out for TSU: Tennessee State won their third straight game on Thursday evening, with a three-point victory against Charleston Southern, 78-75. Kenny Cooper swiped a steal and registered the go-ahead layup with less than a minute to go. Dedric Boyd recorded a season-high 26 points and matched his career-high with eight rebounds. Boyd scored the most points by a Tiger this season. Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. logged a season-high 15 points in the win. Fitzgerald Jr. sealed the game with a floater in the closing seconds. It's the first three-game winning streak since February 6, 2020.

Last Time Out for SCST: The Bulldogs rattled off 105 points in their contest against Carver College on Thursday evening. Five different players registered at least 10 points, while 13 different players recorded a basket in the victory. Every player grabbed a rebound for South Carolina State. Latavian Lawrence led with way with a double-double, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds. T.J. Madlock filled the stat line with 16 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists.
 
Leading Scorer: Dedric Boyd made his first start of the year for TSU. The Tigers leading scorer cashed in 11-of-18 from the field, including 6-for-13 from deep, in 30 minutes of action. In 10 games, the transfer from Illinois State is averaging 14.2 points per game on 54% from the field. In six of 10 games, he's totaled at least 15 points. Boyd ranks ninth in the OVC, 76th in the NCAA, in terms of shooting percentage.
 
Owners of the Three-Point Line: Tennessee State has two players atop the OVC in three-point percentage, as Kenny Cooper (50%) and Dedric Boyd (44.8%) rank second and third, respectively. On the defensive end, the Tigers have locked down the arc as they hold opponents to 30.7% from deep which sits atop the OVC.
