Tigers Close Out Weekend with Win Over Grambling, 6-3

VICKSBURG, Miss. --- Tennessee State closed out the River City Classic with a 6-3 win over Grambling State on Sunday afternoon. The victory allowed the Tigers to finish 4-1 at the three-day event and move their record to 4-4 on the season.
 
TSU used a 13-hit attack, including three doubles and two home runs. Kayli Mothershed led the attack as she posted three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle. The sophomore opened the scoring with a solo shot to centerfield in the second and drove in the Tigers second run an inning later with an RBI double.
 
The Big Blue went on to score four runs in the inning to take a 5-0 lead. The advantage was enough as starter Raven Loveless held Grambling to three runs, one earned, in a complete game performance.
 
The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh on a Kennedy McCurry pinch hit home run to left field.


GRAMBLING STATE
  • Tennessee State started the attack early as they loaded the bases in the top of the first inning on hits by Bri Vire and Ivory Jones.
  • Renae Spears walked to fill up the bags, but the Tigers were unable to push a run across.
  • Kayli Mothershed hit her first home run of the season with a shot to centerfield.
  • TSU held a 1-0 lead until Marisa Mauroschaft and Mother she hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth.
  • The Tigers proceeded to send 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
  • Anayah Baker-Rowell knocked the third two-bagger of the inning.
  • The double plated Mauroschadt to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Bri Vire produced a run on a sacrifice fly to chase home Lauren Farias who reached on a single before stealing second base.
  • Kennedy McCurry ripped a screamer over the left field wall in the seventh and motored around the bases with her first career blast.
  • Raven Loveless struck out five batters as she earned a win, improving to 2-3.
UP NEXT:
The Tigers open Ohio Valley Conference play with a three game series against Tennessee Tech. The two teams will play a single game on Friday, Mar. 5 and a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 6 at Tiger Field.

  • The Tigers wore all white on Sunday.
  • Anayah Baker-Rowell extended her hit streak to seven with a three-hit performance.
  • Renae Spears has reached base in all eight games this season as she walked twice on Sunday.
  • Lauren Powell has amassed 420.3 innings in her career at TSU moving her into a tie in the programs record book.
  • Powell matched Sarah Davis who tossed the same amount of innings during her career as a Tiger from 1997-2000.
  • Kennedy McCurry hit the first home run of her career.
  • The dinger was also her first hit as a Tiger; registered only two plate appearances as a freshman in 2019 before sitting out the 2020 season.
