Tigers Drop Series Finale at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. --- Tennessee State was held to three hits and one walk in the final game of its Ohio Valley Conference at UT Martin on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers fell 9-2 after the Skyhwaks posted four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth.

Bri Vire led the way for the Tigers with two hits on the day, including an RBI single in the sixth to pull within two runs at 4-2.

Analeigh Coursey the only other hit the Tigers could manufcture and scored on the Vire hit.

Rayne Gray was the second Tiger to reach base on the day with a leadoff walk in the sixth. Two batters later, Gray scored on a groundout by Anayah Baker-Rowell.

Lauren Powell earned the start and held the Skyhawks to one through the irst three innings. UTM chased Powell in the fourth as the first four batters reached base and would all score.

Emily Price spelled Powell and worked two innings allowing two walks and a hit. Price walked the leadoff batter in the sixth, her third frame of work, before recording a strike out. The freshman ran into trouble as the next four batters reached on a hit by pitch, two singles and a grand slam home run.

Powell would return to retire the final two Skyhawks in the sixth. The senior was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-5.


GAME 3
  • Bri Vire collected the first hit of the day with a single to centerfield in the first inning.
  • The Tigers were not able push Vire further around the bases.
  • After the Vire hit, TSU batters would go 14-up, 14-down until the top of the sixth inning.
  • Trailing 4-0, pinch hitter Rayne Gray reached on a walk and was followed by a bunt single off the bat of Analeigh Coursey.
  • Gray scored as Anayah Baker grounded out to second, giving the Big Blue its first run of the game.
  • Vire picked up her second base knock of the game to plate Coursey, cutting the lead in half, 4-2.
  • UTM added five runs in the sixth while the final five batters for the Tigers went down in order.

UP NEXT:
The Tigers will host cross-town rival Belmont in an OVC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch for the opener is set for 1:00 p.m.

NOTES:
  • The Tigers wore gray jerseys, gray pants and blue socks.
  • Lauren Powell appeared in her 108th game in the circle for TSU.
  • Bri Vire collected two hits increasing her weekend total to five.
  • Vire batted .556 during the three-game series.
