NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday at Tiger Field to claim a 5-2 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Morehead State.
After reaching on an error in the sixth,
Ivory Jones was sacrificed to third to set up the go ahead run.
Marisa Mauroschadt's fielder's choice grounder to second base allowed Jones enough time to scamper home and beat the tag for a late 3-2 advantage.
Bri Vire finished 2-for-4 on the day, with the second being the exclamation mark on the contest as Mauroschadt and
Renae Spears scored to produce the final score.
The runs were more than enough for
Francys King who allowed two unearned runs off three hits and two walks. King struck out three and hit a batter on her way to claiming her second consecutive win and improving to 3-1.
The Eagles scored an unearned run in the fourth, only to watch the Tigers respond in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs.
Renae Spears delivered the big blow with a two=out triple to right field to plate
Peyton Fointno and
Kayli Mothershed.
Vire, Spear, Fointno and
Savanah Wallace each picked up knocks as TSU out hit the Eagles 5-3.
MOREHEAD STATE
- Francys King struck out two batters in the first inning of her third start of the year.
- Bri Vire tried to get things started early for the Big Blue with a double to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
- A Savanah Wallace single moved Vire to third, before both were stranded.
- The game remained scoreless until the third when MSU scored on an unearned run to take the lead, 1-0.
- The Tigers wasted no time responding as Peyton Fointno singled up the middle and Kayli Mothershed earned her second walk of the game.
- The base runners set the stage for Renae Spears who drove a ball over the right fielders out stretched glove and sprinted around the bases for a triple.
- The knock chased home Fointno and Mothershed to give TSU a 2-1 advantage.
- The Eagles evened the score, 2-2, in the top of the sixth as they made the Tigers pay for an error to open the frame.
- TSU returned the favor with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning for a 5-2 lead.
- Fointno recorded a sacrifice bunt to move Ivory Jones to third, after the sophomore reached on an MSU miscue.
- Jones scored a batter later as she outraced a throw home on a Marisa Mauroschadt fielder's choice.
- After Spears was hit by a pitch, Vire ripped a two-out single into right field to drive home Mauroschadt.
- A misplayed ball on the play in right allowed Spears to score all the way from first for the final margin.
- King improves to 3-1 on the season.
