NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State was held to five hits on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field, as Jacksonville State escaped with the first two games of the Ohio Valley Conference series. TSU fought back to force extra innings in the night cap before falling 5-3 in eight innings, after the Gamecocks won the opener 5-0.
Francys King held JSU to three runs in game two, giving the Tiger offense a chance to get back into the contest. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh,
Kayli Mothershed drove a ball over the fence in right center to even the score and continue the game.
The Gamecocks were not to be denied as they picked up a two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth to claim the victory and drop King to 3-5 on the season. The freshman was touched for five runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks, while striking out two.
JSU scored a run in the top of the third to gain a 1-0 advantage and held on before adding a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for the 5-0 victory.
Lauren Powell fanned six batters in the contest, but was tagged with the loss and moved to 3-11 on the year.
The Tigers were held to five base runners in game one.
Bri Vire reached on a walk in the first and notched the Big Blue's first knock of the day in the third. TSU would not be able to pick up its next hit untilÂ
Renae Spears registered a hit to lead off the seventh.
GAME 1
- Bri Vire earned a one out walk in the first inning but was not able to advance.
- After Lauren Powell struck out the first two batters of the third, JSU pieced together a walk and back-to-back hits to take a 1-0 lead before Powell fanned the final batter of the frame.
- The Tigers tried to respond in the bottom of the inning with their own two out rally.
- Analeigh Coursey worked a base on balls and moved to second on a Vire single tp right center.
- The two would be left on base as Anayah Baker-Rowell grounded out to third to end the inning.
- JSU extended its lead to 5-0 with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
- Renae Spears opened the bottom of the seventh with a single to end a streak of 10 consecutive Tigers being retired.
- Kayli Mothershed walked to give TSU a pair of runners before a double play ended the contest.
GAME 2
- JSU took the early lead with an unearned run off starter Francys King.
- The Tigers responded with an unearned run of their own.
- Coursey was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and moved to second by a Vire sacrifice bunt.
- The Gamecocks second baseman misplayed a hard grounder off the bat of Baker, allowing Coursey to scamper home to even the score at 1-1.
- JSU used a two-run home run in the third to take a 3-1 lead, which held to the bottom of the fifth.
- TSU once again took advantage of a JSU miscue as Ivory Jones reached on a two out throwing error.
- Kennedy McCurry drove a ball over the left fielders head for an RBI double to bring the Tigers within one at 3-2.
- Mothershed completed the comeback with a solo bomb over the fence in right center to force extra innings.
- In the eighth, JSU put the first two batters on base only to see TSU respond with a force out and a strikeout.
- The Gamecocks picked up a clutch double to plate two runners for the 5-3 lead.
- The Tigers had no answer, going down in order.

- This was the Tigers first game in 14 days.
- The game was the first at Tiger Field since April 2, a 30 day span.
- Game one marked the 12th time this season the Tigers have been shutout, ninth in the last 13 games.
- Lauren Powell has now appeared in 118 games in the circle, tying Shea Morris (2012-14) atop the TSU record book.
- Kennedy McCurry recorded the first double of her career during game two.
- Kayli Mothershed's seventh inning dinger in the night cap was the teams 13th home run of the season tying for seventh in program history with the 2010, 2013 and 2019 squads.
- Powell struck out six batters in game one, while Francys King fanned two raising the pitching staffs total to 162Â on the season.
- The total is the ninth most in program history, passing the 2010 squads total of 159.
