CHARLESTON, Ill. --- Tennessee State was held to five hits on Friday in Charleston, Ill., and dropped the first two games of its final Ohio Valley Conference series of the year. Eastern Illinois pulled off the sweep with a 5-0 win in the opener and a 7-1 decision in the night cap.
After the Panthers scored five runs over the first two innings off
Raven Loveless in game one, the game was halted for close to 50 minutes for lightning in the area. Loveless settled in after the delay, holding EIU scoreless on just two hits over the final four frames. The Tigers were not able to take advantage as they managed just two hits over their final five at innings.
Game two was close to a repeat of game one with the Panthers picking up five runs over the first three innings. The Tigers could only produce three hits in the contest.
Savanah Wallace picked up a knock in the first, while
Lauren Farias laid down a bunt single in the sixth and
Peyton Fointno ripped a single to center in the seventh.
TSU manufactured a run in the sixth as Farias scored on a ground out off the bat of
Kayli Mothershed. Farias stole second and moved to third on a
Bri Vire walk after anÂ
Anayah Baker-Rowell walk.
EIU responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to produce the 7-1 final score.
Francys King (3-7)Â was tagged with the loss in game two, giving up seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and one walk in 5.2 innings of work.
Lauren Powell relieved King in the bottom of the sixth to register the final out.
Loveless dropped to 2-14 after being touched for five runs, fou earned, on seven hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.
All three pitchers finished the day with one strikeout.
Vire and Farias each recorded hits in game one.
GAME 1
- Tennessee State put two runners on in the first inning but were left stranded.
- Anayah Baker-Rowell reached on an error to leadoff the game and moved to second two batters later as Kayli Mothershed earned a walk.
- Eastern Illinois jumped on the Tigers early and often, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second off starter Raven Loveless.
- Before the the Big Blue could step to the plate in the third, the game was halted due to lightning and forced a 49 minute delay.
- When the contest resumed, Lauren Farias picked up the Tigers first hit with a shot down the third base line, but was cut down at second trying to stretch the knock into a double.
- After the break, Loveless scattered two hits over the next four innings, keeping EIU at five runs.
- The Tigers could only manage a Bri Vire single in the fourth inning the rest of the way.
- Loveless (2-14) took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits, two walks and a hit batter while fanning one.
GAME 2
- Eastern Illinois built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third.
- The Tigers received a two out single by Savanah Wallace in the first inning and did not not get another baserunner until a leadoff bunt single by Farias to start the sixth.
- A Baker walk gave the Tigers two runners on with no outs.
- Vire moved the two into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
- Mothershed put TSU on the board, driving in Farias on a groundout.
- EIU would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
- Peyton Fointno collected the final hit of the day for the Tigers with a line drive to center in the seventh inning, but was stranded at first to end the game.
UP NEXT:Â The Tigers will conclude the season with the final game of the series at Eastern Illinois on Saturday. First pitch has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. CT to try and avoid forecasted afternoon showers.
