Men's Basketball Hosts Morehead State on Saturday

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team will host Morehead State on Saturday afternoon and attempt to snap their five-game winning streak.

The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (6-9, 1-2 OVC) vs. Murray State Racers (11-5, 3-0 OVC)

Series History: TSU and Morehead State will meet for the 81st time on Saturday as the Eagles hold a slight advantage in the series, 42-38. Tennessee State owns the edge at the Gentry Center, 23-14. Last season, MSU swept the series and earned a victory over the Tigers at the Gentry Center, 79-66. 

Last Time out for TSU: Tennessee State traveled to Murray State on Thursday evening and suffered a loss to the Racers, 67-44. The Tigers opened up the second half with nine straight points to cut the deficit to 45-35. However, Murray State responded with a 12-3 run to extend their lead. Carlos Marshall Jr. logged 12 points and seven rebounds, while Kassim Nicholson grabbed 11 rebounds – his sixth time this season with double-digit boards.

Money Marshall: Carlos Marshall Jr. has scored in double-figures in four straight games. The redshirt junior led the team with 12 points against Murray State on 5-of-9 from the field. Over the last four games, the Memphis native is averaging 20.3 points per game in two victories. The preseason All-OVC selection ranks second in the conference in three-point percentage (43.8%)

Board Man Gets Paid: Kassim Nicholson has owned the boards for TSU as he's currently tied for second in the OVC with 8.1 rebounds per game. The graduate transfer from UAB has secured double-digit rebounds in six games this season. He leads the team in rebounds, while he ranks third in points per game (10.5).

HBCU All-Star Game Watchlist: Former TSU head coach Travis Williams has built an organization called, HBCU All-Stars LLC, who will host their inaugural All-Star game this April in New Orleans. TSU has four players named to the HBCU All-Star Game Watchlist: guard Kenny Cooper, forward Kassim Nicholson, forward Shakem Johnson and center Jalen Dupree.

Last Time out for MSU: Morehead State extended their winning streak to five games as they defeated UT-Martin on Wednesday night, 76-62. In the second half, the Eagles shot 61% from the field en route to their 15th straight victory at home. Johni Broome posted his 10th double-double of the season with 20 points and 15 rebounds. MSU is 5-0 this season when shooting above 50% from the field.

Lockdown Defense: During MSU's five-game winning streak, the Eagles are allowing just 53.2 points per game, boast a scoring margin of +21.2, a rebound margin of +8.2, are shooting 50 percent as a team and holding opponents to just 37 percent. The Eagles have also committed 26 fewer fouls during this span. Second-year player Johni Broome ranks fifth in school history with 110 career blocks – he needs six blocks to move into fourth place.

Fly Like An Eagle: Morehead State's second-year player, Johni Broome, has dominated the competition this year. The 6-10 forward is averaging 16.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game through 16 games. Broome has scored in double-figures in 11 straight games, while he's secured a double-double in seven of the last nine games. The 2021 OVC Freshman of the Year leads the conference in rebounds, blocked shots (54) and ranks second in field goal percentage (58.7).
