Men's Basketball Falls to Morehead State

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team fell at home to Morehead State, 71-64, on Saturday afternoon.
 
FIRST HALF: Morehead State's Jake Wolfe scored the first basket of the game on the first possession. TSU responded with consecutive layups to take an early lead. The Tigers went scoreless for about five minutes while the Eagles rattled off a 11-0 scoring stretch. Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. ended the drought with a three-pointer, prior to back-to-back layups by Kenny Cooper. In the first half, Fitzgerald Jr. totaled 13 points on 3-of-4 from long range. Morehead State shot 60% from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles out-rebounded TSU, 16-8, while they shot 54.5% from deep (6-for-11). || MSU, 41-31
 
SECOND HALF: To open the half, TSU chipped away at the deficit and went on a 10-4 scoring stretch to bring the game within four, 45-41. Morehead State expanded their lead over the middle part of the half as Jaylon Hall tallied five straight points for MSU. Tennessee State trimmed the Eagles' lead to one point, 61-60, with four minutes to go after two free-throws from Kassim Nicholson. Nicholson, a graduate transfer from UAB, registered 12 points in the second half. Morehead State's Johni Broome converted five of six free-throws to seal the game. || MSU, 71-64
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Kassim Nicholson logged his fifth double-double of the year with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Kenny Cooper filled up the stat sheet with six points, seven assists and matched his season-high of four steals.
  • The Tigers dominated the paint, 44-32, despite being out-rebounded in the game, 31-25.
  • Morehead State went to the free-throw line 19 times compared to TSU's eight attempts.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Cooper matched his season-high of four steals – the Nashville native's swiped a steal in 13 of 14 games played, including multiple steals in seven contests.
  • In addition, Cooper dished out seven assists, the second-highest total this season.
  • Nicholson grabbed 11 rebounds for the second straight game.
UP NEXT: Tennessee State to host Tennessee Tech on Monday afternoon for an MLK matinee, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00pm at the Gentry Center.
