NASHVILLE- Some of the top female athletes from the Nashville area will be on campus for a roundtable discussion regarding Mary Ellen Pethel's book that chronicles Title IX. Pethel, a professor at Belmont wrote the book in 2020 to celebrate the legislation that prohibits sex-based discrimination in sports.
The book entitled; Title IX, Pat Summit, and Tennessee's Trailblazers 50 Years, 50 Stories, has chapters discussing the impact current TSU Director of Track & Field Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice, former Tiger Athletic Director Teresa Phillips, former TSU Director of Tennis Dr. Harriet Hamilton and others.
"It may be hard to believe that Title IX legislation only consists of 37 words with no mention of girls or sports," said Phillips. "But educational opportunities for girls and women grew out of this law. The growth of organized sports for young girls opened the doors for exposure to all participating in sports. It promotes; lifelong health, leadership, discipline, networking skills and professional careers for women at a rate surpassing men."
Cheeseborough-Guice, Phillips, and Dr. Hamilton will be joined by, former Vanderbilt University and current member of the Metropolitan Sports Authority Board Cathy Bender and former Assistant Athletic Director, Dean of Students and Senior Woman Administrator at Belmont University Betty Wiseman as panelists featuring several trailblazing women who have made a lasting impact in collegiate athletics in the Nashville community.
The event entitled "Game-Changing Trailblazers" celebrating Title IX's 50th Anniversary, will be moderated by Pethel and will take place on Tuesday November 15th at the Walter S Davis Humanities Building at 6 p.m. Following the event, books will be available for purchase.
