Women's Basketball Falls on Road in Defensive Battle With UTC

CHATTANOOGA, TN - Sierra McCullough collected 14 rebounds, but the Tennessee State women's basketball team fell to the Chattanooga Lady Mocs 60-31 on the road Wednesday.

McCullough led the Lady Tigers (2-2) with seven points and 14 rebounds. Zyion Shannon added five points and three steals from the bench and Lyric Cole chipped in as well with four points.

Tennessee State out-rebounded Chattanooga 34-33 in Wednesday's game, paced by McCullough's 14 boards.

Tennessee State forced 15 Chattanooga turnovers. The Lady Tigers turned those takeaways into four points on the other end of the floor. Shannon's three steals led the way for Tennessee State.

How It Happened

Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 11-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Tennessee State then cut the Lady Mocs lead to 15-7 before going on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 15-12. Chattanooga responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Tigers trailing 16-12 heading into halftime.

Tennessee State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Tigers faced a 44-23 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.

Chattanooga kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 57-26 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Shannon's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 57-31 with 3:31 to go in the contest. Chattanooga responded and outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 60-31. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
