Women's Basketball Drops First Home Game of Season to Stetson on Buzzer-Beater

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee State women's basketball team fell to the Stetson Hatters 67-65 at home Sunday on a Kiya Turner's buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired.

The Lady Tigers (4-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Erica Haynes-Overton, who had 22 points and five steals. Gia Adams added 19 points and two steals and Lyric Cole added six points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

Tennessee State forced 20 Stetson turnovers. The Lady Tigers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Haynes-Overton's five steals led the way for Tennessee State.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 3-2 advantage, Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run with 8:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Haynes-Overton, to increase its lead to 11-2. The Lady Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter-break with a 21-14 advantage. Tennessee State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 21 points.

The Lady Tigers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 31-28 edge. Tennessee State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 10 points close to the basket.

Tennessee State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Haynes-Overton, to expand its lead further to 39-30 with 6:19 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hatters had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-44 edge. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.

Stetson then erased the Tennessee State lead in the game's final quarter for a 67-65 comeback victory.
