NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team suffered a hard-fought loss to No. 23 Murray State, 73-62, at the Gentry Center.
FIRST HALF: Murray State raced out to a four-point lead to begin the game, prior to
Kassim Nicholson scoring on a floater. The programs battled throughout the first ten minutes; however, the Tigers extended the advantage with four consecutive long-range jumpers in five made baskets.
Kenny Cooper drained two three-pointers during the scoring stretch to increase the lead to 25-12. The Racers went on a 8-2 run to trim the deficit. MSU's DJ Burns tallied four straight to bring the game within single-digits. TSU dominated the post in rebounding (19-16) and points in the paint (16-12).
Nicholson logged seven points and seven rebounds, while
Cooper led the way with ten points on 4-of-5 from the field. ||

SECOND HALF: To begin the half, Murray State went on a 10-4 run to bring the game within one possession. MSU was aided by KJ Williams who recorded nine of the 10 points during the stretch. After a handful of dunks from TSU, the Racers went on a 10-3 to grab the lead with 12:02 remaining.
Nicholson registered a layup before MSU rattled off 11 unanswered points to bring their lead to double-digits, 62-49, with 6:48 to play.

Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. combined for the last 11 points in the final five minutes. ||

INSIDE THE STATS:
- Kassim Nicholson logged 11 points and nine rebounds, four of which were offensive boards.
- Carlos Marshall Jr. led the team in scoring with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
- Murray State's KJ Williams totaled a career-high 39 points, 31 in the second half.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. has scored in double-figures in 14 of the last 17 games.
- Murray State's Tevin Brown, the OVC all-time leader in three-pointers made, has been held to 18 points combined in two games against TSU this season.
- The Racers remain undefeated in conference play and face off against Morehead State on Saturday.
