Men's Basketball Hits the Road for End of Regular Season

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's basketball team will hit the road for the final two games of the regular season.

The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (12-16, 7-9 OVC) at Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (9-19, 6-9 OVC)
Date/Time: Thursday, February 24 || approx. 7:30 p.m. (CST)
Location: Hooper Eblen Center || Cookeville, Tenn.

The Matchup: Tennessee State Tigers (12-16, 7-9 OVC) at Belmont Bruins (24-5, 14-2 OVC)
Date/Time: Saturday, February 26 || approx. 5:00 p.m. (CST)
Location: Curb Event Center || Nashville, Tenn.

Last Time Out for TSU: Tennessee State celebrated Senior Day on Saturday against EIU and earned their second straight victory, 63-49. Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. tallied a game-high 15 points as he's scored in double figures in six of the last eight games. TSU trailed in the rebound margin, but led the points in the paint, 30-20. Kenny Cooper filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Nicholson Dominating: Kassim Nicholson leads the team in rebounding and ranks third in scoring. In terms of the OVC, the UAB transfer ranks second in the conference with ten double-doubles. He's tallied at least ten points and nine rebounds in the last four of five games, including three double-doubles.

#OVCTOURNEY Bound: The Tigers clinched a berth to the OVC Tournament after two wins this past week. TSU currently sits in fifth place in the OVC standings, trailing SEMO by a half game for the fourth spot - an automatic first round bye. Tennessee Tech trails TSU by a half game as well, setting up a key game this Thursday. The highest seed Tennessee State can earn is the fourth seed, while the Tigers could hypothetically drop to the seventh seed.

Series History v. TTU: The Tigers will meet Tennessee Tech for the 74th time in series history. Tennessee State secured the most recent victory on MLK Day (1/17/22) at the Gentry Center, 80-64. Carlos Marshall Jr. scored a game-high 19 points and matched the team-high of six rebounds. Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. tallied a18 points on 50% from the field. The Tigers drained nine three-pointers in the opening half, one-shy of the season-high for a half.

Last Time Out for TTU: The Golden Eagles enter the contest on a two-game winning streak after defeating Austin Peay, 73-69, on Saturday afternoon. With the victory over the Governors, TTU clinched a berth in the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2017-18. Tennessee Tech raced out to a 16-point lead in the first half and ultimately held off APSU down the stretch. John Pettway logged a game-high 22 points as the Golden Eagles dominated points in the paint, 40-16. TTU held Austin Peay to 33.3% from the field.

Looking Ahead to Belmont: The Bruins locked down defensively with a season-high 20 steals against SIUE on Saturday. Belmont defeated the Cougars, 73-62, for their 10th straight victory, 19 of the last 21 have resulted in wins. In OVC home games, the Bruins are 80-5 all time in the friendly confines. Ben Sheppard posted a game-high 20 points, while Belmont held the advantage in turnover and points in the paint.
