Softball Drops Mid-Week DH at Belmont

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State softball team dropped the mid-week doubleheader against Belmont on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST: The Tigers took an early lead after Lauren Farias reached on a free pass and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Anayah Baker sliced an RBI double to right-center field. || TSU, 1-0
 
BOT 1ST: Belmont led off the contest with back-to-back singles. After a groundout, Kristen Green tallied a two-run single to take the lead. || BU, 2-1
 
BOT 2ND: With one out, Emily Cockrill singled up the middle. In the next at-bat, Audrey Lyle increased the advantage with a wind-aided two-run homer to left-center field. || BU, 4-1

TOP 4TH: Tennessee State trimmed the deficit on an RBI double from Maggie Klug, following a two-out hit-by-pitch to Alyssi Drayton. || BU 4-2
 
BOT 4TH: After a pitching change for TSU, the Bruins worked the bases-loaded on two singles and a walk. BU scored on a fielder's choice and extended the lead with a three-run home run from Green. || BU, 8-2
 
BOT 5TH: Belmont's Alicia Veltri singled to begin the inning. The Bruins capped off the cross-town victory scoring on an error and infield single. || BU, 10-2

  • Peyton Fointno went 2-for-2 with a double and sacrifice bunt.

BOT 2ND: To lead off the second inning, Kristen Green blasted a home run to kickstart the contest. The starting pitcher, Alicia Veltri, singled to center field following the four-bagger. After a wild pitch, the Bruins extended the lead after a successful double steal. Kaley Varner increased the advantage with an RBI single and stole second base. With two outs, Cheyenne Cavanaugh logged an RBI single up the middle. || BU, 4-0
 
BOT 5TH: To lead off the fifth inning, Belmont recorded three consecutive doubles and scored two runs to expand the edge to six runs. || BU, 6-0
 
BOT 6TH: Emily Cockrill singled up the middle, stole second and stole third to advance into scoring position. Varner tallied an RBI double to center field to score Cockrill. || BU, 7-0

INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Maggie Klug led the team with two hits and a free pass in three plate appearances.
  • Tennessee State logged two hit-by-pitches, the most in a game this season.
  • Seven of nine starters for Belmont registered a hit.
