COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Jr. Clay, Adong Makuoi, and Zion Griffin combined to score 50 of Tennessee State's 63 total points, but the Tigers fell to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 71-63 on Saturday afternoon in OVC play.
Clay led the Tigers (10-9, 2-4) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Makuoi added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Griffin helped out with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Tennessee State grabbed 47 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Tennessee Tech's 36, led by Makuoi's 10 boards. The Tigers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 14 rebounds into 16 second-chance points.
Tennessee State's defense held Tennessee Tech to only 36.1 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers also limited Jayvis Harvey to 4-of-14 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
After playing to a 10-10 tie, Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run with 11:17 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Griffin, to take an 18-10 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 33-31 advantage. Tennessee State took advantage of eight offensive rebounds to score 13 second chance points out of 33 total in the period
Tennessee Tech then erased the Tennessee State lead in the game's final quarter for a 71-63 comeback victory. Tennessee State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 30 points.
