Parker Records Double-Double as Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest to SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Saniah Parker registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the Tennessee State women's basketball team fell to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 77-59 on the road Thursday.

The Lady Tigers (7-13, 2-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Erica Haynes-Overton, who had 14 points, four assists, and three steals. Parker added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Zyion Shannon added nine points, six rebounds, and four steals.

Tennessee State pulled down 30 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Southeast Missouri State's 28, led by Parker's 10 boards. The Lady Tigers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into 15 second-chance points.

The Tennessee State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 20 Southeast Missouri State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Shannon's four steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.

How It Happened

Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 27-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Southeast Missouri State kept adding to that lead, building a 36-18 advantage before Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Haynes-Overton, to narrow its deficit to 36-26. Southeast Missouri State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Tigers trailing 38-27 heading into halftime.

Following halftime, Tennessee State kept the Redhawks from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Haynes-Overton, to trim its deficit to 40-35 with 6:00 to go in the third. Southeast Missouri State countered and stretched its lead to 54-36 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its nine points in the paint.

Southeast Missouri State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-52 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 74-57 with 28 seconds to go in the contest. Southeast Missouri State responded and outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-59. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
