Men's Basketball Set to Face Third HBCU Opponent of Season in Alabama A&M

OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men's basketball team will take on its third HBCU opponent of the season on Wednesday evening as they will travel down I-65 to face Alabama A&M. The Tigers finished with a 1-1 record in the Emerald Coast Classic over the Thanksgiving break after taking down Southeastern Louisiana 91-77.

SERIES INFORMATION: Wednesday's contest vs. the Bulldogs will be the 24th all-time meeting between the HBCU foes. TSU leads the series 18-5 after picking up an 87-67 victory over the Bulldogs in the Gentry Center last season. TSU won the first meeting during the 1968-69 season.

NOTES & NUMBERS

5: The number of players that finished in double figures against. E.J. Bellinger and Christian Brown both finished with 18, while Kinyon Hodges chipped in 15. Jaylen Jones and Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. both tallied 11 points.

91: The number of points TSU scored against SELU, marking a new season-high for the team.

23-of-27: The Tigers knocked down 23 of their 27 attempted free throws against SELU, marking season highs in both makes and attempts. 

IN THE LINEUP: True freshman Jaylen Jones made his first start in the win over SELU. Jones played a season-high 36 minutes in the victory over the Lions while finishing with 11 points.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jaylen Jones was named the OVC Freshman of the Week after his three-game performance last week. He recorded three double-digit scoring games (10, 18, 11) with his 18-point game against Mercer being a season-high. Jones averaged 13.0 ppg, 7,0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. The Nashville native is averaging 10.4 ppg through seven games this season.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Kinyon Hodges was named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Tigers to a 1-1 record in Florida. The EIU transfer finished with 18 points against Mercer while finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists against SELU.

CHASING 100: E.J. Bellinger will look to become the first TSU player to cross the 100-point threshold this season as he needs three more points. Bellinger sits at 97 points through seven games this season, after finishing with 109 points in 22 games last year at Belmont. Bellinger's 109 points last year marked the first time in his four-year career that he had reached the century mark in a season.
