NASHVILLE - Erica Haynes-Overton hit a game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime, but the Tennessee State women's basketball team was outscored 15-11 in the extra period and fell 90-86 to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks at home Thursday.
The Lady Tigers (8-15, 3-9) had four players score in double figures, led by Erica Haynes-Overton, who had 24 points and six assists. Saniah Parker tacked on 20 points and Lyric Cole chipped in as well with a double-double from the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Led by Cole's five offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 21 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
Tennessee State did a great job disrupting Southeast Missouri State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Cole's two rejections led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-3, Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run with 8:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Haynes-Overton, to take an 11-4 lead. The Lady Tigers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 22-14 advantage. Tennessee State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
The Lady Tigers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 39-36.
Tennessee State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Tigers faced a 64-49 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
Tennessee State narrowed its deficit to 73-59 before going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Parker's three, to shrink the deficit to 73-72 with 44 seconds to go in the fourth. The Lady Tigers rally continued as they outscored Southeast Missouri State 3-2 the rest of the way to tie it at 75-75 and send the game to overtime. Haynes-Overton's 3-pointer sent the contest to an extra period with only two seconds left. Tennessee State took advantage of eight Southeast Missouri State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 16 points off of those takeaways.
Southeast Missouri State then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Tennessee State behind 90-86 at the final buzzer.
