Women's Basketball Stumbles in Overtime against EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Saniah Parker knocked down a game-tying shot with 20 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, but the Tennessee State women's basketball team was outscored 11-7 in the extra period and fell 71-67 to the Eastern Illinois Panthers on the road Saturday.

The Tigers (5-13, 2-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Sanaa' St. Andre, who had 18 points and two steals. Lyric Cole tacked on 12 points and nine rebounds and Zyion Shannon helped out with 11 points, two steals and two blocks off the bench.

Led by Cole's five offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.

Tennessee State forced 19 Eastern Illinois turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Saturday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Saniah Parker's three steals led the way for Tennessee State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-4, Tennessee State went on a 12-0 run with 6:07 left in the first quarter to take a 16-9 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-14 advantage. Tennessee State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Tennessee State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:46 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Cole, to increase its lead to 22-14. The Panthers cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 32-27 advantage heading into halftime. Tennessee State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.

Eastern Illinois then took a 37-36 lead following intermission before Tennessee State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Shannon, to grab a 41-37 lead with 3:49 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Tigers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 45-40 edge. Tennessee State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 13 third-quarter points.

Tennessee State then surrendered that advantage as Eastern Illinois forced overtime by tying things up at 60-60 by the end of the fourth. Tennessee State took advantage of four Eastern Illinois turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.

Eastern Illinois then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Tennessee State behind 71-67 at the final buzzer.
