Volleyball drops 3-1 match to Western Illinois

NASHVILLE —The Tennessee State volleyball team fell to the Western Illinois Leathernecks in four sets (18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-27) Thursday at Kean Hall.

The loss dropped Tennessee State's record to 8-20 overall and 4-11 in OVC action.

The Tigers were led by a double-double from Jazmin Vergara, who registered 11 kills and 14 digs on the day. Jayla Holcombe also added nine kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Hadley Pride chipped in for with 21 digs to go with six blocks from Holcombe.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Tigers found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-18. Tennessee State trailed by as many as seven points as Western Illinois grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up just once before the Leathernecks took control.

SET 2 | Tennessee State fired back from a first-set loss to take set two 25-23, evening the match at 1-1. The  Tigers survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. Tennessee State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Western Illinois attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Western Illinois grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Tigers in the third set. The Lady Tigers came up short by the score of 25-20. Western Illinois grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up three times before the Leathernecks took over the lead.

SET 4 | Tennessee State then lost the fourth set 27-25 to finish off the match. The Tigers fell in a tight set, losing in a stanza that was tied four times and had two lead changes.
