FORT COLLINS, Colo. —Aaron Nkrumah knocked down a top of the key lunging three-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Colorado State finished the game on a 7-0 run to narrowly escape an 87-79 win over Tennessee State on Friday evening.
The Tigers (1-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Brandon Weston, who had 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Aaron Nkrumah tacked on 12 points and five steals off of the bench and Knute Wood helped out with 11 points off of the bench.
Weston pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace the Tennessee State offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 15 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-12, Tennessee State went on an 11-0 run with 9:21 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Ahmir Langlais, to take a 23-17 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 32-30 advantage. Tennessee State took advantage of six offensive rebounds to score six second chance points out of 32 total in the period
Colorado State proceeded to take a 45-34 lead before Tennessee State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Josh Ogundele's layup, to shrink the deficit to 45-41 with 13:21 to go in the contest. The Tigers rally continued as they outscored Colorado State 29-25 the rest of the way to tie it at 70-70 and send the game to overtime. Nkrumah's 3-pointer sent the contest to an extra period with just two seconds left. Tennessee State got a boost from its bench in the period, accounting for 22 of its 38 total points.
Colorado State then took control in overtime and won 87-79.
