Men's Basketball Drops OVC Opener 77-75 to Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, IND. —Brandon Weston totaled 33 points and Aaron Nkrumah added 20, but the Tennessee State men's basketball team fell to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 77-75 on the road Thursday.

The Tigers (4-8, 0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Weston, who had 33 points and eight rebounds. Nkrumah added 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals and Josh Ogundele added nine points and eight rebounds.

Led by Weston's three offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

The Tennessee State defense held Southern Indiana shooters to only 40 percent from the field. The Screaming Eagles did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only eight offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points while Tennessee State pulled down 31 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 32-27, Tennessee State went on a 7-0 run with 4:47 left in the first half to take a 34-32 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 40-39 advantage. Tennessee State capitalized on eight Southern Indiana turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

Southern Indiana proceeded to take a 61-56 lead before Tennessee State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Nkrumah's jumper, to seize a 65-61 lead with 5:47 to go in the contest. Southern Indiana re-asserted control, outscoring the Tigers 16-10 the rest of the way to hand Tennessee State the 77-75 loss. Tennessee State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 35 points.
