CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Tennessee State women's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory over Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon despite battling tough weather to start the match. The win moves TSU to 4-17, 2-3 OVC.
Set to be an outdoor match, the Tigers and the Panthers battled 20 mph winds early on until lighting forced the match indoors.
TSU took the doubles point to start the match after picking up wins at lines one and three. The doubles duo of Warona Mdlulwa / Francisca Gomez-Weiss logged a 6-4 victory in the first spot, while Franka Sindicic / Louise Ratiu also won 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles.
Heading into singles play up 1-0, TSU reeled off four wins to grab the 5-2 victory over EIU. Aroa Arrieta Castillo won 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 at line three, while Francisca Gomez-Weiss logged a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Jovana Nikolic was victorious at line five as she won 6-4, 6-1. Perri Howard won by withdraw at line six.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Huntsville, Ala., to take on Alabama A&M.
