NASHVILLE – Tennessee State volleyball came out swinging on Friday night inside Kean Hall, challenging Southeast Missouri State through the opening two sets before the Redhawks pulled away late to take a 3-0 decision (18-25, 18-25, 10-25).
The Tigers (1-25, 0-13 OVC) opened the match with confidence, using aggressive serving and steady defense to stay within striking distance through multiple early ties. Freshman Aliyah Harris paced the offense with eight kills on a .250 clip, while senior Maygan Miller-Garcia added eight kills and a team-high nine points behind a .286 hitting percentage and a solo block.
Defensively, Erini Bitsaktsi anchored the back row with 15 digs and a team-best three aces, continuing her consistent all-around play. Graduate setter Giulia Gainelli provided a spark in both rotations, notching 11 assists and 11 digs for her third double-digit effort in each category this season. Senior Sagaia Reilly chipped in 13 assists and an ace, while Mikayla Moore delivered an efficient five kills on eight swings (.625).
How It Happened
Set 1 (18-25) – The Tigers traded blows with SEMO through five ties and two lead changes, jumping out early on a kill from Harris and an ace by Bitsaktsi. Miller-Garcia and I'Onna Jones kept TSU within one midway through the frame, but a late Redhawk run made the difference as SEMO edged the opener.
Set 2 (18-25) – TSU carried its momentum into the second, tying the score three times and forcing SEMO errors with strong service pressure. Harris, Jones, and Moore combined for eight kills, while Bitsaktsi delivered back-to-back aces during a 3-0 Tiger spurt that cut the deficit to 18-16 before the Redhawks responded late.
Set 3 (10-25) – The Tigers continued to battle but couldn't slow SEMO's offense in the final frame. Moore and Miller-Garcia each tallied kills early, and freshman Melae Lacy added a point off the bench before SEMO closed on a late surge to secure the match.
