CHATTANOOGA, TENN. — The Tennessee State women's tennis team faced a tough challenge on the road against Chattanooga on Thursday afternoon, ultimately falling 7-0 at the UTC Tennis Center.
The Tigers fought hard in doubles play but were unable to secure the opening point. The No. 3 pairing of Victoria Cooksey and Jovana Nikolic fell 6-0 to Margaret Manolache and Emma Pedretti, setting the tone for the Mocs. TSU's No. 2 duo of Francisca Gomez-Weiss and Natalie Walsh battled but came up short, losing 6-3 to Savannah Presson and Madlena Orlova. In the top-seeded doubles match, Louise Ratiu and Claudia Murdasanu put up a strong fight but fell 6-4 to Alice Hall and Rozalie Dohnalova, giving UTC the doubles sweep.
In singles action, TSU continued to push but could not turn the momentum in their favor. At the No. 1 spot, Gomez-Weiss was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by Dohnalova. Ratiu put together a competitive first set at No. 2 singles but ultimately dropped a 7-5, 6-0 decision to Presson. The No. 3 and No. 4 matches followed a similar pattern, with Aroa Arrieta Castillo and Jovana Nikolic each falling 6-1, 6-4 to Pedretti and Zara Burns, respectively.
The most dramatic match of the day came at No. 5 singles, where Cooksey took the first set 6-2 before Manolache responded with a 6-2 second set and a decisive 6-0 third set. Walsh rounded out the day for TSU at No. 6 singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 match to Hall.
