Amiyah Ferguson: Learning From a Legend, Chasing a Dream

1/30/2026 11:24:00 AM

For Amiyah Ferguson, choosing Tennessee State University was about more than finding the right fit on the court — it was about opportunity, mentorship, and vision.

A junior guard from St. Stephen, South Carolina, Ferguson came to TSU with a clear goal in mind: learn from one of the game's greats and prepare herself for the next level. The chance to play under a WNBA legend was a deciding factor in her recruitment process and remains one of the most meaningful parts of her collegiate experience.

"I wanted the opportunity to learn from someone who's been where I want to go," Ferguson said. "Having a coach who understands the game at the highest level pushes me every day."

That daily exposure to elite knowledge has shaped how Ferguson approaches the game. Known for her fast, flashy, and dynamic style of play, she's grown into a versatile guard capable of impacting the game in multiple ways. Whether she's creating offense, defending full court, or stepping into a new role for the team, Ferguson credits her development to learning the details — the habits, mindset, and expectations that come with playing at a professional level.

"My versatility has grown the most since I got here," she said. "Being able to play different positions and adjust to what the team needs is huge, especially if you want to play beyond college."

That professional mindset has been with Ferguson since the beginning. Inspired by her father and older brothers, she fell in love with basketball early — even when it meant being the only girl on the court. That confidence carried her through high school, where she helped lead her team to back-to-back region championships, and now fuels her drive at the Division I level.

As an upperclassman, Ferguson has embraced her role as a quiet leader. She leads by example, showing consistency, effort, and accountability — traits she knows are essential for the next stage of her career.

"I try to do things the right way every day," she said. "I know younger players are watching, and I also know this is preparation for what I want to do long-term."

That long-term vision is clear. Ferguson's goal is to play in the WNBA, continuing the cycle of learning, growth, and excellence that first brought her to TSU. And when her playing days are over, she plans to stay connected to the game as a sports commentator — a goal that aligns with her communications major and love for storytelling.

"I want to stay around the game," Ferguson said. "Whether it's on the court or behind the mic, basketball is always going to be part of my life."

Being part of TSU Women's Basketball, she says, means being part of something bigger than herself — a program built on culture, accountability, and shared ambition. Motivated by her family and grounded in her purpose, Ferguson continues to take advantage of every lesson, every rep, and every opportunity to learn from those who've already reached the level she's chasing.

And for Amiyah Ferguson, that journey — learning from a legend while building her own legacy — is just getting started.
