MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University women's tennis team continued its road stretch Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 decision to Middle Tennessee State University at the Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Doubles Play
The Blue Raiders secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
At No. 2 doubles, Victoria Cooksey and Claudia Murdasanu battled through a tight contest. After falling behind early, the Tiger duo fought back to tie the match at 4-4 before Middle Tennessee closed out the final two games to take the 6-4 win.
The No. 3 pairing of Aroa Arrieta Castillo and Taylor Ellis also worked to regain momentum after an early deficit but ultimately fell 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles match featuring Natalie Walsh and Julie Tungamarial saw the Tigers cut into an early 3-0 deficit to make it a one-game match at 3-2 before Middle Tennessee pulled away to secure the doubles victory.
Singles Competition
Middle Tennessee carried its momentum into singles play, claiming all six matches.
Julie Tungamarial competed at No. 1 singles, battling back to even the opening set at 2-2 before falling 6-2. In the second set, Tungamarial again fought to level the score early at 1-1 before the Blue Raiders closed the match 6-1.
Victoria Cooksey faced a tough challenge at the No. 2 position, falling in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Natalie Walsh dropped the first set 6-1 and fell 6-0 in the second at the No. 3 spot.
At No. 4 singles, Aroa Arrieta Castillo delivered the Tigers' strongest push of the day. After trailing early, she rallied to take the opening set 6-4 before the match ultimately swung in favor of Middle Tennessee in the deciding super tiebreak.
Claudia Murdasanu also battled in the No. 5 position, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set before the Blue Raiders rallied to take the set 6-4 and went on to secure the match in straight sets.
Taylor Ellis competed at No. 6 singles but fell 6-0, 6-0.
The loss moves the Tigers to 0-7 on the season.
