NASHVILLE — Tennessee State men's basketball added another piece to its 2026 signing class with the addition of Garrett Shelton, a 6-foot guard from Frisco Heritage High School in Frisco, Texas.

Shelton helped lead Frisco Heritage to the 2025 Texas Class 5A Division I State Championship, the first boys basketball state title in school history. Known as a high-energy guard and defensive stopper, Shelton built a reputation for guarding the opposing team's top perimeter player while also serving as one of the team's primary playmakers.

During his senior season, Shelton averaged 5.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game while helping Frisco Heritage post a 36-game season. He led the team in steals, assists, and deflections while earning recognition as one of the top assist leaders in Texas Class 5A basketball.

Shelton ranked among the top players in Region II and Class 5A in assists per game and finished third in his district in steals per contest. He also knocked down 42 three-pointers during the 2025-26 season.

Throughout the year, Shelton consistently showcased his all-around game in key matchups. He recorded 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists against The Colony, dished out nine assists in wins over Melissa and Wakeland, and produced multiple games with five or more steals, including a six-steal performance against Berkner.

A physical and disruptive defender, Shelton developed into one of the top perimeter defenders in the district while embracing an unselfish role offensively.

Shelton joins a Tennessee State program coming off a historic 2025-26 campaign that saw the Tigers capture the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship and return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 32 years under first-year head coach Nolan Smith.
