NASHVILLE — Tennessee State men's basketball head coach Nolan Smith has announced the signing of Arterio Morris, a former McDonald's All-American, consensus top-20 national recruit and one of the nation's top junior college prospects for the 2026-27 season.
Morris arrives in Nashville with experience at every level of college basketball, having competed at Texas, South Plains College and Bethune-Cookman. The Dallas native brings a combination of scoring ability, athleticism and high-level experience to a Tennessee State program coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1994.
Last season at Bethune-Cookman, Morris averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 42.2 percent from the field. He totaled 302 points, 102 rebounds, 70 assists, 35 steals and 21 blocks while appearing in 27 games.
Morris recorded 17 double-figure scoring performances, highlighted by a season-high 21-point effort against Coastal Georgia when he added nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and two blocks. He opened the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds at Auburn and later scored 20 points against Florida A&M, 19 points at Dayton and 19 points at Southern.
His versatility was on display throughout the season as he registered seven assists against Coastal Georgia, five assists against South Carolina State, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M, five steals against Coastal Georgia and four blocks against Alabama State. Morris also knocked down a season-high four three-pointers in a road victory over Alabama A&M.
Prior to Bethune-Cookman, Morris starred at South Plains College, where he was rated as the No. 3 junior college prospect in the nation. He appeared in 23 games, including nine starts, averaging 11.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.0 block per game.
Morris reached double figures in 15 contests and played a key role in South Plains' postseason run. He scored a season-high 25 points against Midland College, added 23 points against North Idaho College and posted 21 points in a national tournament victory over Monroe University. He also recorded 18 points against Eastern Florida State College and multiple 15-point performances during the season.
Morris began his collegiate career at Texas, where he appeared in 38 games for a Longhorns team that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. As a freshman, he averaged 4.6 points and 1.4 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range.
His breakout performance came against Louisiana when he scored 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. He also tallied 12 points against West Virginia in Big 12 play and added 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Before beginning his collegiate career, Morris established himself as one of the top high school players in America at Kimball High School in Dallas.
A McDonald's All-American, Morris was ranked No. 15 nationally by Rivals and No. 17 nationally by both ESPN and the 247Sports Composite. He was also rated as the No. 2 player in the state of Texas.
As a senior, Morris averaged 19.4 points and seven rebounds per game while leading Kimball to a 30-9 record and a berth in the Texas Class 5A state semifinals. During the postseason, he elevated his production to 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.2 steals per game, including a game-high 21-point performance in the state semifinals.
As a junior, Morris averaged 23.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.2 blocks per game while leading Kimball to the Texas Class 5A state championship game. His standout season earned him Dallas Morning News All-Area Player of the Year honors.
Morris joins a Tennessee State program that captured the 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship, earned the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid and finished with 23 wins under Smith in his first season at the helm of the Tigers.
