Sam Serata enters his first season as Tennessee State’s director of player development in 2026-27 after joining head coach Nolan Smith’s staff in summer 2026. A Cherry Hill, New Jersey, native, Serata brings experience in professional player training, collegiate basketball and high school coaching.
At Tennessee State, Serata assists with player development, film analysis and opponent scouting. He also oversees the program’s day-to-day operations, including team travel, scheduling and logistics. He joined the Tigers following their 2025-26 Ohio Valley Conference championship season and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 32 years.
Serata’s player development background includes working with New York Knicks guard and 2026 NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson during each of the past four offseasons. His training experience includes individualized workouts emphasizing ball-handling, shooting, footwork and game situations, along with feedback focused on decision-making and efficiency.
Before arriving at Tennessee State, Serata returned to his alma mater, Cherry Hill High School East, as an assistant coach and helped the Cougars capture a sectional championship. His work there followed experience with the Maryland women’s basketball program and Camden High School.
While attending the University of Maryland, Serata worked with the women’s basketball program under national championship-winning head coach Brenda Frese. Frese, who was inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2026, provided Serata exposure to an established Division I program.
Serata served as an assistant coach under Rick Brunson at Camden High School during the 2021-22 season. The Panthers finished 31-3, won the New Jersey Group 2 state championship and advanced to the final of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions. Camden was ranked by MaxPreps as the nation’s No. 1 public school program.
That Camden team featured highly regarded prospects DJ Wagner and Aaron Bradshaw, giving Serata experience on a staff working with nationally recruited players. Bradshaw later joined Tennessee State’s 2026-27 roster, reconnecting the two in Nashville.
As a player at Cherry Hill East, Serata earned first-team all-conference honors and scored nearly 1,000 career points before returning to the program as a coach.
Serata earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland in 2025.
