Muna Lee

Muna Lee joined the Tennessee State University Track and Field coaching staff in September of 2022. 

Lee was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Lee, having recently retired from a 12-year professional sprinting
career, has been coaching collegiate track and field for 6 years. Muna currently owns Top Tier Speed and Performance Inc. There she privately trained all ages of youth sports where she coached Ray South’s Zaya Akins to a record-breaking High School individual National Championship in the 400 meters with a time of 52.88.

Lee recently interned at the University of Wisconsin- Madison with Diversity Inclusion. Previously, Lee was assisting at the University of Missouri- Kansas City before the program was cut due to Covid. At Hendrix College, she led her athletes to 8 individual conference championship titles, two runner-up finishes, a first, second, and third place sweep of the women’s 100m hurdles in 2018, and four school-record performances. Lee has previously volunteer-coached at Texas A&M University, Louisiana State University, and Carson High School in  Carson, California. 
 
Lee attended Louisiana State University (2001-04), where she was a seven-time NCAA champion, 12-time SEC champion, and 21-time All-American, making her the most decorated athlete in school history. She graduated from LSU with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, with minors in Communication Studies and Sports Studies. Lee made her Olympic debut for the United States immediately following an exceptional senior season in 2004. Currently, Lee is working on an MBA in Business.
 
Some of her career highlights include 2009 USA outdoor 100m and 200m runner-up; 2008 Olympic finalist (5th place finish in the 100m, 4th place finish in the 200m - the only female American athlete to double); 2008 US Olympic Trials 100m champion and 200m runner up; 2005 World Champion (4x100m relay); 2005 USA Outdoor 100m runner up; 2004 Olympic finalist (7th place finish in the 200m); 2004 Olympic trials 200m runner up; two-time NCAA Indoor 60 m Champion; 2003 NCAA Indoor 200m champion; two-time NCAA outdoor 100m and 200m runner up. Lee also competed at the 2000 US Olympic trials as a senior in high school, finishing with a best of 11.36 in the 100m dash, making her the fastest high school female in the nation.

She is a USATF level 1 certified coach, with distinction in Sprints and Hurdles.
