Tigers Open Season with 90-80 Win Over Cumberland
The Tennessee State University Tigers opened their 2007-08
regular season with a 90-80 win over Cumberland
University, from nearby Lebanon, Tennessee.
Freshman guard Gerald Robinson, Jr., paced the Tigers with
26 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor, including 4-7 from 3-point range.
Juniors Bruce Price (20), Jerrell Houston (14) and Stephen Evans (10) added
double-figure scoring for the Big Blue.
The game was close throughout as the two teams saw the score
tied eleven times and the lead change fifteen times. Cumberland held a brief five point lead in the first half (16:33),
but the Tigers fought back to lead by eleven late in the half (1:19). The
Tigers held a 50-44 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Cumberland
chipped away at the Tigers' lead to take a 59-58 lead at 13:02 and a three
point lead (61-58) at 12:01. The teams traded leads until TSU forged ahead by
five points (76-71) at 6:20 on a Gerald Robinson 3-pointer. Cumberland closed the game to a 1-point
contest (81-80) with 0:55 remaining, but the Tigers were able to stretch their
lead back to the final 90-80 margin to close out the game.
Tennessee State will host Georgia Tech on Sunday, November 11th
at the Gentry Center on campus. Tip-off is set for
6:00p.
