The Tennessee State Tigers (6-10,
3-4) started well but lost 83-79 to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (4-12,
2-6) at Pete Mathews Coliseum in Jacksonville, Alabama.
TSU jumped out to an 11 point
(13-2) lead at 15:10, but Jacksonville State went on a 14-2 run to take a 16-15
lead at 10:40. The two teams traded leads until JSU took a 30-29 lead with 1:29
left in the first half and finished the half with a 34-31 lead.
In the second half, Jacksonville
State opened with an 11-6 run for a 45-37 lead at 16:04. TSU fought back to tie
the game at 49-49 (13:43) and 56-56 (10:34) but the Gamecocks regained the lead
at 59-56 and never trailed again.
TSU guard Gerald Robinson. Jr.,
scored a game-high 23 points leading four other Tigers in double-figures, but
Jacksonville State countered with five double-figure scorers to registered
their second consecutive OVC “upset” win this week.
Joining Robinson in double-digit scoring
for Tennessee State were Reiley Ervin (16), Jerrell Houston (12), Bruce Price
(12) and Darius Cox (11). Houston finished with a game-high 11 rebounds for his
third double-double of the season.
The Gamecocks' leading scorer was
Nick Murphy (19) followed by Amadou Mbodji (18), J.J. Wesley (16), Jonathan
Toles (15) and Will Ginn (11).
Jacksonville State hit 28 of 40 (70%)
from the foul line compared to the Tigers' 8 of 14 (57.1%) from the charity
stripe. TSU connected on 32 of 62 (51.6%) shots from the floor, while JSU hit
24 of 50 (48%) from the field. The Tigers won the battle of the boards 34-31.
