Weaver's 3-pointer at buzzer
lifts Tigers to Win
Trailing by six-points at
halftime, Tennessee State (9-11, 6-5) rallied past Tennessee Tech (8-12, 5-6)
for a 73-72 win at the Eblen Center in Cookeville, Tennessee.
The Tigers started slowly falling
behind the Golden Eagles by thirteen points, 23-10, at the 10:24 mark. The
Tigers went on a 21-10 run to close the score to 33-31 with 3:02 remaining in
the half, but TTU closed out the half ahead 40-34.
TSU opened the second half
with a 15-4 run to take a seven-point
lead, 51-44 at 14:54. TTU regained the lead 58-57 at 9:09 and the two teams
traded leads until a 70-70 tie with :26 remaining. The Golden Eagles took a
two-point lead 72-70, with :07 remaining, but TSU's Gerald Robinson, Jr. was
able to drive the length of the floor and dish off a pass to LaDarious Weaver
who drained a three-point shot as the clock expired for the TSU win.
Gerald Robinson was the game-high
scorer with 27 points. Bruce Price added 13 points and Reiley Ervin canned 10
points for the Tigers. Darius Cox scored 8 points for the Tigers, while collecting
8 rebounds.
Tennessee Tech's top scorers were
Amadi McKenzie (19), Anthony Fisher (15) and Will Barnes. Northern Daniel was
the game's top rebounder, pulling down 12 rebounds.
TSU won the battle of the boards
32-29, and shot 42% (24-57) from the floor and 71% (15-21) from the foul line.
TTU shot 50% (24-48) from the field and 79% (19-24) from the line.
The Tigers will return to action
on Tuesday, January 29th when they host Jacksonville State at Gentry
Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30p.
