Dallas, Texas --- The Tennessee State University women's
basketball team dropped its second straight Friday afternoon after suffering an
83-66 loss to Fresno State in the opening game of the Hoops for the Cure
Tournament.
Tennessee State (2-4) was led in scoring by Jasmin Shuler
with 19 points while Simone Hopes and Chelsea Hudson came off the bench to
score 12 and 11, respectively. Hudson also led the Lady Tigers with six
rebounds.
Fresno State (3-2) had four players to score in
double-figures led by Ki-Ki Moore's 20 points. Rosie Moult (17), Madison
Parrish (15) and Veronica Wilson (11) also notched double-figures for the
Bulldogs.
A number of empty possessions to start the game led to TSU
falling behind 10-0 before a lay-up by Rachel Allen finally put TSU on the
board with 14:03 on the clock. Later, a couple of buckets by Simone Hopes
chopped the opponent's lead down to, 12-8, but Fresno State answered with a
three-pointer to go back up 15-8.
The Bulldogs managed to stretch their advantage to double-digits
on two occasions before the Lady Tigers used a small rally to cut the deficit
down to 25-20 (3:50). Fresno State, however, closed out the half with an 11-2
run to carry a 36-22 lead into the break.
Fresno State opened the second half with a 7-2 run to take a
43-24 lead over Tennessee State. The Lady Tigers answered with a small spurt
and outscored the Bulldogs 9-2 over a span of three minutes. Fresno State called
a timeout to slow the Tennessee State momentum and built the lead up to 51-35 a
few possessions later.
A triple from Jasmin Shuler at the 12:16 mark made the
score, 54-40, in favor of Fresno State before the Lady Tigers cut the deficit
down to just 12 points with 10:49 remaining in the game.
Another run, however, gave the Bulldogs their largest lead
of the game, 76-53, with 3:40 on the clock.
TSU continued to fight and narrowed the gap down to just 13
points but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
TSU went 25-of-65 (38.5 percent) from the field while only
connecting on 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Fresno State shot 45.8 percent
(27-of-59) from the field and 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Tigers committed 22 turnovers and were outrebounded
46-32. The Bulldogs recorded 23 turnovers.
The Lady Tigers will face either Cal State Fullerton or
Southern Methodist in the consolation game tomorrow at 5 p.m.
