EVANSVILLE, IND. — The Tennessee State women's basketball team came up short in a 90-66 loss to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles at Ford Center Wednesday.
The Tigers (10-21) had two players score in double figures, led by Somah Kamara, who had 17 points. Saniah Parker tacked on 13 points and two steals and Lyric Cole added six points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
The Tennessee State offense was strong from three-point land, knocking down nine threes on 30 attempts. Kamara hit four treys for the Tigers in the contest.
The Tennessee State defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 21 Southern Indiana turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Cole's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 35-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 56-33 by the time halftime rolled around.
Tennessee State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Aaniya Webb, to trim its deficit to 56-38 with 6:15 to go in the third. Southern Indiana countered and stretched its lead to 72-49 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Tennessee State kept the Screaming Eagles from increasing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Xaionna Whitfield's three, to shrink the deficit to 74-60 with 6:56 to go in the contest. Southern Indiana responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 90-66. Tennessee State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 17 total points.
