Jackson, Miss. --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team suffered a disappointing 67-43 road loss to Jackson State Saturday afternoon in the Lee Williams Assembly Center.

Tennessee State fell to 4-6 while Jackson State (1-4) picked up its first win of the season.

Kesi Hess was the only player to score in double-figures for TSU with 14 points while Donyeah Mayfield grabbed a team-best nine boards.

Jackson State had five players to post double-digits led by Beatrice Banks' 13 points. Kiana McCarty (11), Rachel Jones (11), Tiffany Kellum (10) and Takeya Felder (10) also registered double-figures.

Tennessee State shot a dismal 25.4 percent (17-of-67) from the field, including 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from three-point range. TSU also committed 23 turnovers and lost the battle of the boards, 53-40.

TSU scored the first points of the game before four empty possessions, including three turnovers, led to the Lady Tigers falling behind 10-2 before the first media timeout.

The Lady Tigers pulled to within five when Kesi Hess knocked down a triple from the corner to end a five-minute scoring drought for the TSU. Kim Haynes knocked down a three-pointer to cut the opponent's lead down to, 14-8, before JSU used a 12-0 run to build its advantage up to 26-8 with 4:46 left in the half.

With 4:35 on the clock, Rachel Allen scored a lay-up that snapped a six-minute skid and sparked an 11-4 run that cut the deficit down to 30-19 at the half.

The Lady Tigers went 7-of-31 from the field in the first half, including 3-of-12 from three-point range.

Early in the second half, Kesi Hess nailed back-to-back triples to cut the deficit down to single digits, 34-27. Jackson State, however, responded with nine unanswered points to go back up, 43-27 at the 14:07 mark. 

Later in the frame the Lady Tigers rallied to pull within single digits, 47-38, following a couple of buckets by Avery Jones. The TSU offense continued to struggle and JSU outscored the Lady Tigers 13-2 over the next three minutes to swell the lead to 60-40 with about five minutes left in the game.

The deficit proved too much to overcome.

Jackson State went 22-of-57 (38.6 percent) from the field but only knocked down 1-of-8 (12.5 percent) from long range. Both teams hit 66.7 percent of their free-throws but TSU went 2-of-3 from the line compared to 22-of-33 by JSU.

The Lady Tigers will have a week off before returning to action at Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Dec. 18. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. in the Murphy Center.
