Woodstock, Ga. --- The Tennessee State University softball
team dropped the final contest of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Sunday afternoon
to host Kennesaw State, 12-2, at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex.
Tedra Alford hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning but
Tennessee State (6-10) saw Kennesaw State (10-4) post 14 hits on the way to the
win.
Aisha Walker (1-for-3), Tedra Alford (1-for-2), and Ashley
Haynes (1-for-2) each recorded hits for TSU while Susie Burke was tagged with
the loss. Burke pitched two innings, allowing eight hits and recording one
strikeout. Olivia Gamache threw in three innings for TSU.
Kennesaw State pounced on Tennessee State in the first
inning with a six-run effort to go ahead, 6-0. Three runs in the second inning
and another in the fourth made the lead, 10-0, before the Owls added two more
runs in the fifth to swell the advantage to, 12-0.
Tennessee State finally got on the board in the bottom of
the fifth inning behind a two-run homerun from Tedra Alford.
Jill Gardner reached base after she was hit by a pitch.
Gardner scored when Tedra Alford recorded her first homerun of the season to bring her
home. Those two runs, however, were the only runs that TSU would score.
Tennessee State finished the game with three hits while
Kennesaw State tallied 14. Neither team committed any errors.
The Tigers will play in their final tournament of the season
next weekend at the Stetson Invitational, March 4-6.
