Tigers Swept on First Day of OVC Series by Jacksonville State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State was not able to keep Jacksonville State grounded on Saturday afternoon as the Gamecocks took the first two games of the Ohio Valley Conference series. JSU (19-13, 9-0) needed all seven innings to secure a 11-3 win in game one and just five innings to grab game two, 10-2.

The Gamecocks used 10 of their 17 hits to build a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener. The Tigers tried to respond in their half of the frame as they started with a walk by Lindsey Burgess and a double by Lauren Dreitlein. Burgess would score two batters later on a groundout by Erica O'Kane.

JSU extended its lead with seven runs in the seventh, making the score 11-1. The Tigers tried to get back in the ball game, but could only manage two runs in the final stanza. Dreitlein picked up her second hit of the game after TSU loaded the bases. The base knock plated Abi Stephens and Courtney Gearlds to produce the final result.

Whitney Gillespie improved to 5-1 as she held the Tigers to a run on three hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Erika O'Kane (2-4) was tagged with the loss as she worked the first 3.1 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks.

The Tigers found themselves down 3-0 in the bottom of the second in the nightcap before cutting into the Gamecocks lead. Cariona Hassell delivered a one-out single into left center to chase home Lauren Dreitlein to get TSU back within one at 3-1.

The Tigers would add another run in the third as Burgess hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Gearlds to cut the lead to 3-2.

JSU responded in a big way as they notched five runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, giving Taylor West the win. West entered in the third inning in place of Casey Akenberger and closed out the game surrendering just a walk to the Tigers, while striking out two.

Lauren Powell suffered the loss and dropped to 3-8 after getting touched for eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits and two walks.

Danica Gleason earned hits in each game to extend her hitting streak to 10, while Gearlds increased her run to eight games with a knock in each game.

Dreitlein finished with two hits in game one, but her seven game streak ended as she finished 0-2 in game two.

The Tigers and the Gamecocks will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Tiger Field.
